If you have experienced the loss of one or more of your teeth, you are not alone. By the time Americans reach the age of 74, around one in four will have lost all their teeth. Not only is tooth loss problematic from an aesthetic perspective, but it can also affect the contours of a person’s face.
When a tooth is lost (or is surgically removed), the bone that surrounded it will no longer receive the stimulation it needs to remain healthy. Over time, the bone recedes, changing the way the tooth socket originally looked. This can create an indented area in the gums.
For patients with this type of condition, Dr. Mark Leopold, Dr. Nicholas Murphy, Dr. Craig Main, and Dr. Ian Leopold may recommend gum contouring through ridge augmentation, or bone grafting, in San Luis Obispo, CA.
Ridge augmentation is a method of gum contouring that fills in the depression that is left behind after bone loss. Usually, gum contouring is considered to be cosmetic surgery, but some “clefts” in the gums can become caverns where bacteria become trapped and could lead to gum disease. Besides, it is important for most people to have a mouth that looks as beautiful as possible, and we fully support our patients’ decisions to appear their best.
During ridge augmentation, we will either address the problem by gum contouring the soft tissue and/or the hard tissue. The soft tissue area will be numbed and grafts will be placed into the gum tissue from other areas in the patient’s mouth. Sutures are used to keep the graft in place until it can heal.
If hard tissue ridge augmentation is the preferred method, the area will again be numbed, but the graft used will be bone, not gum tissue. Bone will be grafted from either another place in the patient’s mouth, or from a donor source. Like the soft tissue ridge augmentation surgery, the hard tissue is closed with sutures and left to heal.
Dr. Mark Leopold, Dr. Nicholas Murphy, Dr. Craig Main, and Dr. Ian Leopold can determine if you would benefit from a ridge augmentation procedure. To learn more about gum contouring and bone grafting in San Luis Obispo, CA, contact our office for an appointment.
